The spiritual home and ecclesiastical community to which St. Sebastian Church, Madathil belongs.
The Archdiocese of Thalassery, formerly known as the Diocese of Tellicherry, was established on 31 December 1953 by Pope Pius XII. It was established during a period when large numbers of Syro-Malabar Catholics migrated from the southern parts of Kerala to the northern regions.
From its humble beginnings, the diocese grew rapidly and became an important centre of Catholic life and pastoral service in northern Kerala. Its boundaries were later extended to serve Catholic communities in neighbouring parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
As the Catholic community continued to grow, the diocese was divided to establish new dioceses including Mananthavady in 1973, Thamarassery in 1986 and Belthangady in 1999. On 18 May 1995, the Diocese of Tellicherry was elevated to the status of a Metropolitan Archdiocese.
St. Sebastian was a Roman soldier and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.
"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."
